Huh? How's that possible??? I'm as surprised as you are.

This news came up when a closed Facebook group moderator, Andrea Downing, found out that a chrome extension called 'Grouply.io' allowed her download employers, names, locations, email addresses and other personal info on the group that has 9,000 members . Huh? How's that possible???
I'm as surprised as you are.

According to CBNC, The 9,000 group is actually for women who's genes are associated with a higher risk of developing breast cancer and who have medication information or issues they don't want to be shared outside the group .

The group moderator, Andrea Downing, decided to consult a security researcher, Fred, about her findings and he discovered that  closed Facebook groups had a privacy leakage that gave Grouply.io the opportunity to gain access to their information . The researcher accessed not just information for downing's group but for other closed groups and reported the issue to Facebook which after several communications with the social media company, they(Facebook) eventually shut down the ability to collect this type of information from closed groups.
Moreover, A Facebook Spokesperson has made it clear in his statement " While we recently made a change to closed groups, there was not a privacy loophole".

Facebook have lately been under fire for its failure to protects users' privacy so many times this year and its no news that the most recent is the issue of allowing millions of users' information to slip into the hands of Cambridge Analytica. You can read How Facebook collects your datas.

As it is now, Facebook have updated the privacy for closed groups. The company said Membership lists of closed groups would not be visible to non-members anymore because they got too many requests for increased privacy from closed and secret group admins.
The only people that are visible to non-members or those outside the group are only Admins and Moderators.
